The Perfect 3 Day Edinburgh Itinerary
Edinburgh is one of those cities that immediately pulls you in — think historic, walkable, moody in the best way, and packed with cozy cafés, iconic viewpoints, and charming neighborhoods. I’ve been twice now, and this 3-day itinerary is perfect if you want to see the highlights without rushing, while still leaving time to wander and soak in the magic.
If you’re planning a first (or repeat!) trip, here’s exactly how I’d recommend spending three days in Edinburgh.
Day 1: Old Town Classics and Cozy Evening Views
Morning: Coffee + Brunch
Start your first morning at Fortuna Coffee Bar, one of my favorite coffee spots in the city. It’s warm, inviting, and the perfect place to ease into your trip.
After coffee, head to Greenwoods for brunch — a classic, hearty spot that hits the spot before a full day of walking.
Afternoon: Royal Mile + Victoria Street + Princes Street Gardens
From brunch, walk down the Royal Mile, taking your time to pop into shops and admire the historic architecture. Make sure to detour onto Victoria Street, one of Edinburgh's most iconic and colorful streets (and yes, it’s just as pretty in real life as it is in the photos).
Warm up with a hot chocolate at Knoops, especially if you’re visiting in the colder months.
Next, head toward Princes Street Gardens, where you can stroll through the park with views of Edinburgh Castle towering above. If you’re visiting in December, the Christmas Market is here and adds such a festive, cozy vibe.
Evening: Castle Views + Dinner
As night falls, make your way to see Edinburgh Castle lit up after dark. The nighttime views over the city are stunning and absolutely worth seeing.
For dinner, book a table at Angels with Bagpipes (the Old Town location). Afterward, grab drinks at The Devil’s Advocate — intimate, atmospheric, and perfect for winding down your first day.
Day 2: Scenic Walks + Dean Village + A Unique Dinner
Morning: Calton Hill + Coffee
Start the day with a walk up Calton Hill for panoramic city views. It’s an easy climb and one of the best viewpoints in Edinburgh.
Afterward, grab a coffee at The Milkman, a super popular café right off the Royal Mile.
Late Morning: Castle Visit + Brunch
Have brunch at Margot, then head to Edinburgh Castle. If you want to go inside the grounds, be sure to book tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons.
Afternoon: Dean Village + Shopping
Walk through Dean Village, one of the most picturesque areas in Edinburgh. It feels straight out of a storybook. Keep an eye out for the Edinburgh Coffee Bike, too.
Later, head back toward Victoria Street to browse the shops. Pro tip: if it’s cold (it probably is), this is a great time to buy a scarf or beanie as a practical souvenir.
Stop by St. Giles’ Cathedral. It’s especially beautiful during the holidays when it’s decorated for Christmas.
Evening: Dinner at The Witchery
Dinner tonight is special, as you’ll dine at The Witchery. This is one you’ll want to book well in advance — it’s incredibly popular, but absolutely worth it if you can snag a table. The atmosphere is unmatched. I’d highly recommend coming hungry — their beef Wellington special was fabulous.
Day 3: Markets + Neighborhood Charm
Morning: Coffee + Arthur’s Seat
Start your last day with another coffee from Fortuna (it’s that good), or pick a local spot of your choosing. Then head to Arthur’s Seat for a walk or light hike. In warmer months, this is especially lovely and offers sweeping views of the city.
Afternoon: Holyroodhouse + Stockbridge + Lunch
Stop by the Palace of Holyroodhouse, as it’s beautifully decorated for the holidays (yet equally as beautiful in non-holiday months!) and fun to explore.
Afternoon:
Make your way to Stockbridge, one of Edinburgh’s prettiest neighborhoods. Check out the Stockbridge Farmer’s Market, then stroll down Circus Lane, a famous photo spot (for a reason!)
For lunch, eat at The Pantry — a cozy, neighborhood favorite and the perfect way to wrap up your trip.
Final Thoughts
Edinburgh is one of my favorite European cities — cozy, charming, and endlessly walkable. This 3-day itinerary balances must-see sights with slower moments so you never feel rushed.
